National Scientific and Technical Conference "Bulgaria's Mineral Resources Base - Non-metallic Minerals"

On November 22nd, 2019, at the National House of Science and Technology, Sofia, the National Scientific and Technical Conference "Mineral Resources of Bulgaria - Non-metallic Minerals" was held.

The conference is the second with  a similar topic after the one conducted last year and looks at issues related to ore minerals.

The main organizer of the forum was the Scientific and Technical Union of Mining, Geology and Metallurgy, and the co-organizers were the Federation of Scientific and Technical Unions, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgarian Chamber of Mining and Geology, University of Mining and Geology "St. Ivan Rilski", Sofia St. Kliment Ohridski University, Bulgarian Geological Society, Society of Geophysicists in Bulgaria, Bulgarian Mineralogical Society and Section "Earth Sciences" at the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria.

More than 75 scientists, specialists and veterans of the mineral industry took part in the conference. At the inauguration, the chairman of the Scientific and Technical Union for Mining, Geology and Metallurgy, Dr. Eng. Kremena Delyanova noted that the country has stocks of 48 types of industrial minerals and 48 types of construction and rock-lining materials and emphasized the importance of mineral raw materials for the country's economy and the relevance of the conference topics.

Academician Todor Nikolov presented a welcome address by Academician Julian Revalski - Chairman of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Greetings were also given to the conference participants by Eng. Lilia Smedarchina – Deputy - the president of the Federation of Scientific and Technical Unions, Prof. Dr. Rumyana Vatseva - Chairman of the "Earth Sciences" section of the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria. Greetings were also sent by the University of Mining and Geology "St. Ivan Rilski", the Bulgarian Chamber of Mining and Geology, the Bulgarian Geological Society and others.

The the conference was held in three meetings, where 10 reports were presented on the state of the mineral base and non-metallic minerals, deposits, market conditions in this area and the legislative base. The following interesting reports were presented: on the condition and extraction of construction materials and on the regulatory framework by  Eng. Ts. Tsvetkov; on the industrial minerals - by T. T. Aladzhov; on a new deposit of industrial minerals by Dr. Eng. N Vardev and the Bentonite Production by Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Kovacheva and Prof. Dr. V. Velev. During the conference, two presentations were made of companies that exploit non-metallic minerals - Elatsite Med AD, which is developing the Mial quarry and Kaolin EAD.

The participants in the conference were very active during the discussion of the reports, which suggested that a new Law on Mineral Resources should be organized by the The Scientific and Technical Union for Mining, Geology and Metallurgy next year, in accordance with the current conditions and being useful to all. The idea of ​​creating a single institutional body responsible for underground resources, such as the Geology Committee, was also supported.

The active participation of the experts, the numerous questions after the reports, the current thematic areas and the proposals made are proof of the success and usefulness of the conference.

Scientific and Technical Union for Mining, Geology and Metallurgy
