Solarpro’s Yankovo PV Power Plant Put into Operation
Sofia, 24 August 2009. Today the first stage of the Solarpro’s photovoltaic power plant was officially put into operation in the village of Yankovo, Shumen. The first stage of the project "North-East 1" has an installed capacity of 338 kWp. The plant has been successfully connected to the E.ON electricity distribution grid? and delivers electricity to the distribution company. The full capacity of the PV power plant will be operational by the end of the year. The entire photovoltaic plant "North-East 1", with nominal power of 2,404 kWp, will be the largest PV park in the country.
To build the first stage the project uses 8 064 thin-film photovoltaic modules. The metal frame bearing the modules are aligned in 13 rows at the first stage. The PV power plant is not built on agricultural lands, but on industrial land, which prior to the clearance accommodated abandoned farm buildings and greenhouses. Thus, the facility does not use current agricultural land, but actually reclaims abandoned farm land. The reclamation of abandoned and polluted industrial sites is part of the company’s mission and this approach will be applied in all future projects.
The “North-East 1” PV power plant is constructed with thin-film photovoltaic panels, manufactured by Solarpro in its Silistra-based factory. It is the only company in Bulgaria, which concludes the entire PV module manufacturing – power plant integration chain. The components of the power plant are mainly made in Bulgaria, and all subcontractors are local companies that provide direct and indirect new jobs in the region of Northeastern Bulgaria.
Solarpro photovoltaic panels pertain to the type of thin-film amorphous-silicon panels. The main advantage of this technology is that it requires much less investment per unit of installed capacity compared with other distributed solar technologies, providing higher yield. Another advantage is that thin-film amorphous-silicon panels have excellent performance in low intensity of sunshine and diffuse light, which makes them effective for cloudy weather. These panels also perform better than conventional crystalline modules when operating at high ambient temperature.
The Company is a member of the group of Kaolin AD. Solarpro is the biggest solar panels manufacturer on the Balkans, with planned capacity of 18 MW annually, organized at this stage in three production lines. The company’s equity was recently increased, again, from BGN 12 million to BGN 24 million. The first panels of the factory’s first production line in came out of production at the end of March. The expectations are Solarpro to act as a driver of regional cluster for clean energy technology and production establishment.
